Work permits in Edmonton

Applications and extensions for people who want to work in Canada, explained step by step.

Overview

A work permit is the document that lets a foreign national work in Canada for a set period. Some permits tie you to one employer, while open permits let you work for almost any employer. Which one applies depends on your situation, your job offer and the rules in force when you apply.

We help you work out which permit type fits, prepare the application and supporting documents, and keep track of what the government asks for next. If you already hold a permit, we also help you plan an extension before it expires.

Who this suits

  • People with a job offer from a Canadian employer
  • Recent graduates of Canadian programs looking at post-graduation options
  • Spouses and partners of workers or students who may qualify for an open permit
  • Current permit holders who need to extend or change conditions

What to prepare

  • A valid passport with enough time left on it
  • Your job offer letter and, where one is required, the employer's supporting paperwork
  • Proof of your education, training and work history
  • Any language test results that relate to your role
  • Your current permit or status document, if you are already in Canada
  • Passport-style photos and the details of any family members travelling with you

How it works

  1. Consultation

We review your situation, your job offer and your timeline.

  2. Permit type

We explain which work permit routes may apply and what each one needs.

  3. Document checklist

You receive a clear list of documents, with help gathering each item.

  4. Application

We prepare the forms, review them with you and submit the application.

  5. After you apply

We watch for requests from the government and help you respond on time.

Common questions

It depends on the permit. An employer-specific permit names one employer, so a change usually means a new application. An open permit does not name an employer. We check your permit conditions before you make any move.

Many work permits are tied to a job offer, but not all of them. Some open permits and some programs for graduates or spouses work differently. In the consultation we look at what applies to you.

Apply for an extension before the expiry date if you can. Whether you may keep working while an extension is pending depends on your situation, so ask us early and bring your current permit to the consultation.
